--> Wilderness (SA)

I can't write a comprehensive report about today, but I do share the photographs with you. I need to "dry" something first....
I stayed another day with Paul and Sue Nicolas in their Bed & Breakfast in Wilderness and got on a 3-hour Wilderness Heritage Hiking Trail and after a little lunch I peddled on the serene waterways in this area in a canoe, even into the deep wildlife forests where I got thrilled by the fauna hiding out here.

Unfortunately I went head down the water after reaching the waterfall at the end of the 30-minutes Greater Kingfisher Trail that started when I couldn't canoe any further.

And it wasn't only me that went down... even my digital camera made bubbles. Oops! World problem! Uhm...

Tomorrow you'll see the results and how I continued my travelling.

Paul ordered me this extra day in Wilderness to get into the nature. So he helped me out to get on the Wilderness Heritage Trail. Starting near the train tracks.

Leading along the beautiful south coast.

And up where I ended up and had this great view on the popular swimming and recreational beach from a point named Leentjiesklip. Possibly named after Leentjie, a legendary oyster gatherer who considered the slither of rocks going into the sea as her own territory.

I walked along the dry exit of the Kaaimans river, passed the high railway bridge and got more inland.

This is a view on the Kaaimans Outspan, a much needed resting place for man and beast, where they shadow offered rest after the rigours of the steep road down in to the Kaaimans gorge and a chance to replenish strength before tackling the vertical climb to the hillside above.

And these birds were really everywhere in the water.

Descending steep slopes the weight of a wagon could easily run into the straining oxen if not halted. So the wheels of the wagon were locked by means of a wooden shoe type brake to prevent rotation. The wagon wheels then slid over the ground, wearing these deep ruts into the rock as you see here.

And these green grasshoppers start blocking my trail all the way until the end. Some jumped around of me, some where dried out by the hot burning sun. But I had to be carefull not to step on them.

Map of Africa: Another great viewsite where active gorge cutting in the mountain range could be seen clearly. The Kaaimans river looks vaguely like the outline of the African continent, does it not?

Where the Heritage Trail ended, I had this beautiful view on Wilderness and the rest of the Garden Route along the beach. I am going to love this place!

Along the road the local people sell their fruit and vegetables, together with their crafts.

After a short bite at the B&B, I continued my sportive day for a canoe trip that was offered to me by Eden Adventures in Wilderness. This was on the way to their Office in the middle of the nature.

And suddenly I was together with nature, on rustic waters.

I peddled myself into the wild life nature, and could not believe the sound of so many animals in a place like this. It was truely unbelievable.

At the end of the canoe-able river, I walked 30 minutes along the Greater Kingfish Trail which would lead to a fascinating head-cooling waterfall. That was todays goal.

And when the waterfall was in sight, I took off my clothes and I jumped in. How do you call that? Skinny-dipping? Aaaaaahhh.

And for dinner, Paul prepared nice meats on the braai.

Basically I was not allowed to leave the next day without taking a picture of Titu, their doggy.

The lovely and comfortable lounge at the Mont Fleur B&B.

Ending up with the bbq-dinner in the diningroom, companied by three charming ladies from Germany.
